“No More Silence: Advocating for Stronger Laws Against Online Harassment”

In recent days, three sisters have been publicly subjected to horrific rape threats on social media—targeted not for any fault of their own, but simply because their brother had conflicts with a certain community. This is yet another disturbing reminder that women continue to bear the brunt of hostility and violence, even when disputes exist solely between men. From history to the present, women have been used as tools of humiliation, abuse, and oppression—treated as collateral in conflicts they have no part in. Today, social media has become a breeding ground for harassment, where trolls and abusers can freely degrade and threaten women with impunity. In response to this alarming trend, Samriddhi Foundation Nepal has taken a firm stand against such heinous acts. To demand immediate action, we have submitted a memorandum to President Kamala Parajuli of the National Women Commission, urging strict measures to curb online harassment and gender-based threats. Standing in solidarity with this cause, a group of female journalists has joined us, amplifying our call for justice and accountability. The time for silence is over. It is imperative that these toxic and dangerous behaviors are condemned, and that concrete actions are taken to ensure the safety and dignity of women—both online and offline.
